This is a pilot of the Falx reference harvester and search tool. Falx is part of ViTaL, the Virtual Taxonomic Library.

We are currently harvesting and indexing a selection of the EDIT Scratchpad bibliographies. The database currently contains 12,303 items.
New and expanded data sources are coming soon.
We will also be expanding the initial feature set and improving the user interface.
Please note that ViTaL does not host the reference data. If you see errors, please click through and inform the source site owner. Their corrections will appear in Falx after the next data harvest.
Searching
The search engine uses Lucene syntax.
Example searches:
- mountain
- "North America" (A phrase search).
- "North America" AND pub:"Proc. U.S. Nat. Museum" (Boolean operators (uppercase AND, OR, NOT) can be used).
- Wales NOT "New South"
- flora AND type:book
- flora AND type:book AND year:1918
- carbon* (An asterisk can be used as a wild-card character).
Searchable fields:
- title
- booktitle
- year
- abstract (the first 500 characters are indexed)
- note
- fulltext (combines all of the above plus the keywords field into a single search field)
- author
- pub (publication title, based on journal, book or series title)
- type (e.g. article, book, chapter, inbook, proceedings, thesis)
Searches can be made against specific fields by searching on fieldname:value. e.g. year:2001
Machine access
Results can be downloaded in json format by adding &format=json to the query string. Using format=bibtex retrieves bibtex data.
